Alchemist are a bizarre band. I held off writing about this disc for a while because I was unsure of how to express what these guys sound like. Labels really don't do them justice. For instance, I thought perhaps the Industrial label would fit, but Alchemist are much to melodic and far more heavy metal than most Industrial bands. The "progressive metal" label also could fit, although this label tends to bring thoughts of Dream Theater or Fates Warning, of which Alchemist sounds like neither. Alchemist, at least on this disc, defy definition. ("Organasm" is their fourth album.) Imagine a mix of Rush, Pink Floyd, Megadeth and and Napalm Death you might get a picture. The vocals range from clean singing to haunting shrieks to death metal grunts. Lyrically the band reminds me of Rush as well, with their exploration of science and the surreal, all of which is quite poetic and esoteric. "Organasm" is an experimental and progressive metal monster.
