KYUSS Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley (Elektra) 1994 I. II. III. "Lick Doo" [unlisted] (0:58) Avoiding all things glossy, blissful and poppy, "Sky Valley" is a gloomy, dark and dingy album that is basically split into three chunks of music, or really jams. "Sky Valley" does have 10 tracks, but the band divided it into 3 songs: tracks 1-3, 4-6 and 7-10, which are almost a continuous flow of music. Songs are not the point here, but rather, bassy, doomy, jams. This album might have been recorded in the early 1990's, but it sounds like it might have been recorded in 1973, or for that matter, 1969. The album is a cross between Black Sabbath and Hawkwind. Fuzzy guitar tones, bass driven and lots of wispy cymbals. For the most part the music is all slow to mid-paced, though the band does bring some speed in, such as on "Asteroid". Picture a room with tie-dyed tapestries, billowing, sweet smelling smoke, and a band jamming and you might get the picture of what to expect here. Yes, you got it, stoner rock at it's finest.
