Guitarist Roland Grapow and drummer Uli Kusch are both from the German power metal band, Helloween. After forming Masterplan with Iron Savior bassist Jan. S. Exkert and vocalist Jørn Lande, I was honestly expecting this to basically sound like Helloween Pt. 2. While there are some similarities, since both bands are power metal, Masterplan is not a carbon copy. First of all Jørn's voice is simply fantastic, and helps give the band their identity. However, the music is quite good as well. The music is what you might expect from a European power metal band, however, Masterplan incorporate some classic metal and rock elements to help set them apart. Together with Jørn's voice, at times I was reminded of Rainbow and Deep Purple. "Enlighten Me" for instance has this 80's feel that reminds me of the aforementioned bands. Once again, this isn't to say that Masterplan sounds like a carbon copy of Rainbow either. Imagine a mixture of Helloween and Rainbow and you might get an idea of the sound here. My copy is the limited edition 2-disc version, although disc 2 is one of the things you look at once then never again.
