RANGER Ranger - Where Evil Dwells (Spinefarm) 2015 Hailing from Finland, Ranger play speed metal that reminds me of early Exciter and for some reason I am also reminded of the classic speed metal album "Tales of Terror" from Hallow's Eve. There are even a few nods to the NWOBHM, and more specifically DiAnno era Maiden and the manic speed of Raven. This is especially true in the epic length title track. The music is raw, fast and build around a barrage of feverish riffs. The vocals are manic, but more in the style of those early Exciter albums with high pitched screams and gruff singing. The overall fury is unrelenting!
Ranger aren't really doing anything new with "Where Evil Dwells", but that's not really the point either. A jazz musician isn't criticized if he plays jazz. I find it completely odd when metal fans criticize a band because they are not trying something 'new' or 'different'. Ranger play speed metal and they play it well. The songs had me instantly banging my head as I roared down the road, cranking the CD at maximum volume. After all, isn't that exactly what you want from a heavy metal band
