SOMBRANCE Sombrance - Eli (independent) 2003 1. "Back and Forth"
(4:25) Far and away one of the most interesting demo CDs I have ever received. Sombrace have a very unique sound that actually makes it difficult to describe in words. Words like somber, emotional, and melancholy come to mind when I think about Sombrance's music. At times the music almost has a Pink Floyd-like quality. "Back And Forth" is a slow, mellow number with a nice, memorable chorus and some melodic guitar solos. "Lucky 7" picks up the tempo a bit and rocks a bit harder. This track has a bit of an alternative flavor that would probably do well on modern rock radio. "Mercy River" takes the tempo back down once again, returning to the more somber, melancholy mood of track one. Personally I think Rick Mester's vocals work better for these more melancholy tracks. This EP finishes off with "Wasting Away", a song that features a dirty guitar sound and a slow, bluesy vibe. Overall, a solid EP and one that was surprisingly enjoyable to a guy who usually favors heavier music. Should also make mention that Jimmy Brown of Deliverance fame plays bass on this disc as well as handled the mixing and some background vocals as well. |
