2. "I Feel Free"
3. "Young Love"
4. "Psalms of Aftermath"
5. "Colors"
SIDE TWO

7. "Down on Philips Escalator"
8. "The Lovely Lady"
9. "Night Time"
10. "It's Not True"
11. "Gimme Love"

The first recording for Ted "The Duck" Nugent at the young age of 19. The Amboy Dukes debut was post-psychadelic garage rock with some early proto-metal beginning to creep into the mix. The Duke's heavy cover of blues standard "Baby, Please Don't Go" is a perfect example of early proto-metal. This song would make its way into the Nugent catalog again on the awesome "Double Live Gonzo". The Amboy Dukes contains seven original compositions and four covers, including a trippy cover of The Who's "It's Not True".

Unfortunately this particular release is one of the rarer Amboy Dukes releases. I'm not sure it's ever been officially released on CD. There is a Japanese version of "The Amboy Dukes" with a different cover. That album has been on my want list for nearly two decades.

10. Death Is Life (2:08)
11. Saint Philips Friend (3:32)
12. I'll Prove I'm Right  (1:38)
13. Conclusion (1:57)

Limited edition, red-vinyl reissue of the 1960's Amboy Dukes classic album. "Journey to the Center of the Mind," was The Amboy Dukes' sophomore release and was released in April 1968 on Mainstream Records (56112 mono (promo only) and stereo S/6112 stereo). The title track, the album cover and the concept for side two of the record are all based around drug use. The title track in itself is about tripping on acid. The album cover depicts different kinds of marijuana-smoking devices. Ted Nugent claims to this day that he didn't know that the album was promoting drug use. Ted has always been very outspoken about the evils of drug use.

The album crept into the Top 100 Charts with its highest position hitting #74. Side one was was a collection of songs that echo bands like Cream and The Yardbirds. Side two of the record is a concept/story. The entire side was meant to be played as one piece. However, the title track became the band's hit single and decades later is the song that most people know The Amboy Dukes from. Of course the Dukes was Ted Nugent's band, so it's his playing that offers this fan the most immediate appeal. Nothing on here is all that accomplished, as far as technique goes, though Ted does offer a bit more fire than most of the typical guitarists of the 60's, save for perhaps Jimi Hendrix. The guitar solo in "Flight of the Bird" certainly gives an indication of the Motor City Madman of the not too distant future. This LP contains a song that I have always held to as one of my favorite song titles "Why Is a Carrot More Orange Than a Orange".

Marriage on the Rocks
Amboy Dukes - Marriage On The Rocks-Rock Bottom
(Polydor) 1969

SIDE ONE
1. "Marriage"
...i. Part 1: Man
...ii. Part 2: Woman
...iii. Part 3: Music
2. "Breast-Fed Gator"
3. "Get Yer Guns"
4. "Non-Conformist Wildebeest Man"
5. "Today's Lesson"
SIDE TWO
6. "Children Of The Woods"
7. "Brain Games Of Yesteryear"
8. "The Inexhaustible Quest For The Cosmic Cabbage"
...i. Part One
...ii. Part Two
9. "Excerpt From Bartok: Second String Quartet, Beginning 2nd Movement"

"Marriage on the Rocks" was a transition record for the Amboy Dukes. The initial pressings of this record simply had the band name at the top with 'featuring Ted Nugent' added in small type to the left. Later pressing replaced the Amboy Dukes name with Ted Nugent with the Amboy Dukes name in smaller letters under Ted Nugent's name.

It was clear that Ted was becoming the alpha male in this band and the style was turning from the experimental 60's rock to a harder rock formula. However, "Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom" isn't nearly as hard rockin' as follow-up's like "Survival of the Fittest" or "Tooth Fang & Claw". The first song is composed by Nugent, Marriage/Part 1: Man/Part 2: Woman/Part 3: Music. This sounds more like Jethro Tull than anything you would expect from Ted. The song is an over nine minute long epic number that combines equal parts progressive rock and blues. The remainder of the material up to the bizzarly titled "The Inexhaustible Quest For The Cosmic Cabbage" was also written by Ted. "Cosmic Cabbage" is the sole song written by Andrew Solomon and certainly fits into the whole 1960's vibe. Can't say this is a favorite song of mine, but the song does contain and interesting hodge-podge of ideas. The music on this album was recorded by legendary producer Edwin H. Kramer (Eddie Kramer) at Mira Sound in December of 1969. Eddie is, of course, known for his work on the Woodstock recordings, with Jimi Hendrix and later, KISS, Anthrax, Fastway and more.

I own two different pressings of this one on vinyl. The original "Amboy Dukes featuring Ted Nugent" (Cat. # 24-4012) pressing comes with a 6"x10" black and white lyric booklet. The repressed Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes" is catalog #PD 1 073.

Amboy Dukes records in his dressing room.

Several different LP versions of "Survival of the Fittest" exist. I'm told that the rarest is the version with the front cover letting in white. I had read that this was a rare test pressing. Rather, I've found out that some copies pressed in Germany have the white letting and also omits "And The Amboy Dukes" all together. The common version, pictured above, has the blue and red letting. I had my copy signed by Ted when I met him in Beaver Dam, WI in 2008. I also own a copy of the German pressing, also pictured above. See CD section for review and details.

Ted Nugent & the Amboy Dukes - Gigantes Del Pop (Polydor) 1981

SIDE ONE
1. "Survival of the Fittest" [instumental] (6:16)
2. "Rattle My Snake" (3:05)
3. "Mr. Jones' Hanging Party" (4:48)
4. "Papa's Will" (9:05)

SIDE TWO
5. "Slidin' On" (3:04)
6. "Prodigal Man" (21:11)

Part of the "Gigantes Del Pop" series released by Polydor in Spain that also featured bands like The Dave Clark Five, Cream, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Genesis, David Bowie and many others. As far I I know most of these releases were compilations of the band's earliest studio recordings. However, The Amboy Dukes "Gigantes Del Pop" is actually just a repackaging of their live album "Survival of the Fittest". Basically, a collector for the Nugent fanatic and nothing more.

SIDE TWO
1. "Mississippi Murderer"
2. "Let's Get Stoned"
3. "Down on Philips Escalator"
4. "It's Not True"

"Dr. Slingshot" is a compilation of early Amboy Dukes songs. One of many compilations that Mainstream would release once the band left the label following the release of "Migration". Oddly enough, this compilation does not feature the hit "Journey to the Center of the Mind" or the popular "Baby, Please Don't Go" off the band's debut. (Thanks Trog.)

Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes - Tooth Fang & Claw
(Discreet) 1974

An interesting lot of promo records. These two promos were formerly owned by Howard Kaylan of The Turtles. The records were sold through Backstage Auctions and came with a certificate of authenticity signed by Howard. I think the Certificate is probably worth as much as the reords. Pretty cool! See above for the track listing of each. (Thanks Morgan)

There are two slightly different vinyl pressings of "Free-For-All". The initial pressing on Epic Records had Ted Nugent printed in multiple different colors in a thin font. Subsequent re-pressings have Ted Nugent printed all in gold with a much bolder font. (see scans to the right) As well, the initial printing had a picture sleeve and did not have a bar code on the back cover.

Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes (Mainstream) 1976

SIDE ONE
1. "Good Natured Emma"
2. "For His Namesake"
3. "Scottish Tea"
4. "Gimme Love"
SIDE TWO
5. "Ivory Castles"
6. "Inside the Outside"
7. "Night Time"
8. "Colors"

By 1976, Nugent was a household name, selling out concerts nationwide. As such, the Amboy Dukes former record label took advantage of that time to release this collection of old Amboy Dukes songs. For some stranger reason the label decided to not give this compilation a title, which wouldn't be that big of a deal except for the fact that it makes things confusing with the band's debut, which is also self- titled. I always like the "Nugent/Medussa" cover art for this one, even though it's oddly on a pink background. The overall compilation is decent, but oddly enough doesn't have the band's biggest hit "Journey to the Center of the Mind". Not that big of a deal for me, as I have never been one to concern myself with hits and tend to get bored with them anyhow. I do think that this platter is a bit short on songs. Mainstream could easily have added another song on each side of this record. I don't believe that this particular compilation was every officially re-released on CD. I also found it odd that this album isn't really listed on any Amboy Dukes discographies on the internet.

Cat Scratch Fever Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever (Epic) 1977

2.   "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" (3:17)

9.   "Fist Fightin' Son of a Gun" (2:51)
10. "Out of Control" (3:38)

The album cover for "Cat Scratch Fever" is a gatefold and opens to reveal Ted's chest being scratched by young female hands. See CD section for review and details.

11. "Motor City Madhouse" (10:35)

"Double Live Gonzo" features a gatefold cover. I own two copies of this record, one is signed, as seen above and the other is a still sealed, mint copy. See CD section for review and details.

3. "Great White Buffalo"
4. "Hey Baby"
SIDE TWO
5. "Hibernation" [instrumental]
6. "Motor City Madhouse"

Killer live bootleg. Sound quality is a little shakey, as this seems to be an audience recording. Track number one was recorded at a different concert with the Amboy Dukes. According to the liner notes, the song was recorded at the Woodstock Music Festival. (Thanks a ton Morgan)

Incredible collector's picture disc. "State of Shock" was released as a promo disc only, and apparently was never officially for sale to the public. See CD section for review and details. (Thanks again Morgan)

Shock Waves Ted Nugent - Shock Waves (Epic) 1979

1. "I Want to Tell You"
SIDE B
2. "Paralyzed"
3. "Cat Scratch Fever"

7" collector's single that was released to help promote "State of Shock" in 1979. Nothing really new on it, but is a cool collector's single. Note the boots that Nugent is wearing in this photo. My good friend and fellow Nugent fanatic Morgan Nederhiser owns those boots now. I'll eventually post a photo of them on this site.

9.   "We're Gonna Rock Tonight" (3:20)
10. "Tailgunner" (7:00)

This is one of my favorite records in my Ted Nugent collection, not only because I enjoy the music so much, but because Ted personally signed this one to me the second time I met him. It's one of the few album covers I have had framed and hanging on my wall. And being the total geeky fanboy, I also picked up a Japanese promo with OBI and inserts and an American radio promo copy, both at a record show.

See CD section for review and details.

Ted Nugent - Bound and Gagged (Atlantic) 1982

SIDE ONE
1. "Bound and Gagged" [long version]
SIDE TWO
2. "Bound and Gagged" [short version]

Radio promo single for "Bound and Gagged" from "Nugent". The picture cover lists "Habitual Offender" as the b-side, but the single actually has the same song on both sides, although the b-side single is a radio edit version. The label is the light blue Atlantic label, which I believe was used for promotional singles only.

Bound and Gagged Ted Nugent - Bound and Gagged (Atlantic) 1982

SIDE ONE
1. Bound and Gagged
SIDE TWO
2. No, No, No

12" promotional single to promote the "Nugent" album. Comes in a standard white sleeve with a Ted Nugent logo printed onto it. A nice collector's item for the Nugent fanatic. (Thanks Bill)

Amboy Dukes Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes (Mainstream) 1982

SIDE ONE
1. "Good Natured Emma"
2. "For His Namesake"
3. "Scottish Tea"
4. "Gimme Love"
SIDE TWO
5. "Ivory Castles"
6. "Inside the Outside"
7. "Night Time"
8. "Colors"

One of the many Amboy Dukes collections that came out during the 70's and 80's when Ted was at the top of his game. This one has the exact same track listing as the Medussa cover from 1976 (see above). Genius in marketing and packaging here. Mainstream Records obviously aware of Nugent's popularity used a photo from the late 70's and made Ted's name look similar to the logo seen on his popular albums. Of course the unaware would be expecting "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Free For All" when in fact they were getting some of Teddy's 60's material. (Thanks Trog!)

SIDE TWO
4. Medley:
...Cat Scratch Fever

5. "Dog Eat Dog"

This is a bootleg in the truest form. Everything about it screams "for hardcore fans only", from the cheesy, unmarked, white labels on the LP, to the incorrect track listing on the back cover, to the black and white cover, right down to the radio commercials still on this LP. Yes, you can hear commercials for Budweiser, Jensen audio and even The U.S. Army along with some live, prime, Uncle Teddy. The end of side two even includes the King Buscuit commercials announcing the live, on-the-air, concert. Good thing I am one of those hardcore fans. Recorded live on the King Biscuit Flower hour in Nashville, TN 1984 on the Penetrator tour. The sound quality is good, being that it was recorded directly from the radio. Unfortunately the entire show was not aired.

11. "Cat Scratch Fever"
12. "Dog Eat Dog"
13. "Turn It Up"
14. "I Love You So I Told You A Lie"
15. "Out of Control"
SIDE FOUR
16. "Hard As Nails"
17. "Live it Up"
18. "Death by Misadventure"
19. "State of Shock"
20. "Where Have You Been All My Life"

Interesting vinyl collection. First of all, there seems to be no ryhme or reason to the track listing. While there are some great songs selected, it almost seems like the label threw a bunch of songs from Nugent's Epic years into a hat and just pulled them out and used this random selection as the order. Another interesting note about this vinyl collection there are a couple of minor mistakes in the track listing. "Motor City Madhouse" is listed as "Motor City Madness" and "Smokescreen" is listed as two words, "Smoke Screen". Otherwise, I find this two record set to be a good anthology of Nugent's solo years on Epic/CBS. I found it refreshing to have songs like "Out of Control", "Turn it Up", "Hard As Nail","Smokescreen" and "Where Have You Been All My Life" as well as the more popular songs like "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Stranglehold". I was surprised to see "Paralyzed", "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" and "Free For All" left off, as these were certainly a few of Nugent's more popular songs. The vinyl comes wrapped in a gatefold cover featuring several large photos of 'ol sweaty Teddy. Apparently this collection was only released in Europe on vinyl and cassette.

I have the red version, number 003/300.
