Classics Live! Aerosmith/Get Your Wings/Toys in the Attic (Columbia) 1998

Disc One: Aerosmith (1973)
Disc Two: Get Your Wings (1974)
Disc Three: Toys in the Attic (1975)

Sony "low budget" repackage of the first three Aerosmith albums (Aerosmith, Get Your Wings and Toys in the Attic) in a slipcase sleeve. As far as I know, this package was released in the U.S. only and sells for about $25. All three discs are the remastered series with the additional liner notes and photos. Not worth much now, but give it a few years.

Fifty two Aerosmith songs on three cds filled with unreleased live tracks, out-takes, demo versions, remixes, and a 64-page color book. The book includes a bio, discography, tons of photos, a song by song commentary by the band and quotes by other artists. Do I really need to explain why I have this? This is an Aerosmith fan's dream. My one criticism is that they could have left off the song by Tyler's pre-Aerosmith band, Chain Reaction, and included another early live cut instead. Also, why wasn't "Lightning Strikes" included? Otherwise an excellent package. My generous wife bought me this as a gift. How can you not love a woman like that?

Being the Aerosmith collector I am, I have always wanted the "Box of Fire" box set, despite the fact that I own almost all the cds contained within. I was bummed many years ago to find out it was released in very limited quantities and went out of print soon after it's release. Well, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me! My Mom comes through and finds this at Best Buy, of all places. Thanks Mom. I will not spend time reviewing discs 1-13 as these are all the Columbia releases prior to "Nine Lives." What is cool about these discs, however, is that the spines, when put together in the correct order, create the Aerosmith logo in flames. The "Box of Fire Bonus Disc" contains five tracks not available on any one Aerosmith disc. There are two "Draw the Line" era instrumentals--"Subway " was written by Brad Whitford, Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer during some down time in the studio while the Toxic Twins were off in space somewhere during the worst of their drug infested years. The other instrumental is "Circle Jerk," an outtake written by Brad Whitford that was supposedly released as a "non-LP single B side." I have never seen this single and no information is given on what single the song was a b-side to. The others songs are "Dream On" (MTV 10th Anniversary) with Aerosmith being backed by a complete symphony, "Rockin' Pneumonia And The Boogie Woogie Flu" a cover tune originally recorded for "Permanent Vacation" but only released on 1987's "Less than Zero" soundtrack, and a remixed version of "Sweet Emotion." Overall, this is was a GREAT surprise for me and an incredible addition to my Aerosmith collection.

This is an Australian special with "Classics Live" and "Aerosmith's Greatest Hits 1973-1988" in a sleeve, not unlike the sleeve on the combined first three albums in the U.S. This collection is put out by Sony Australia and titled "The Raw Deal" series. In the end it's just "Greatest Hits" and "Classics Live" packaged together. Got to say, however, the Australian Greatest Hits package is FAR better the American version. First of all it contains TWO songs from each of the neglected first two albums and three songs from the mega-huge "Toys in the Attic." The American version omits "Mama Kin," "Seasons of Whither" and "Big Ten Inch Record." It also includes an uncut, remixed version of "Sweet Emotion" as well as the "radio edit" version from the regular "Greatest Hits" collection. The biggest surprise was the inclusion of "Lightning Strikes" from "Rock in a Hard Place." No doubt this is a killer song. I always wondered why it was never included on ANY Aerosmith compilation. The live version of "One Way Street" is the same version as on "Made in America" and was recorded at Mama Kin Music Hall, Boston, MA, Dec. '94. "Classics Live" is exactly the same as the US version with the exception of an inferior printing job on the cover art.
